FALL foraging weekend

Friday, october 4 – MONDAY, october 7, 2024

join maria with four season foraging for a special weekend exploring and learning about the plants and fungi within the bwca northwoods. attendees will enjoy guided foraging hikes, learning sessions and related activities, and fresh, home-cooked meals.

Registration includes:

3 nights lodging in a private or shared cabin, or private lodge room

2 days of foraging classes, excursions, and activities

welcome reception, daily breakfast and dinner Sunday

  • Saturday: Bogs & Berries

    Breakfast in the main lodge – 8-10am

    break – 10-11am

    indoor presentation – 11am-noon

    Time outside identifying plants & foraging (and keeping an eye out for moose!). Potential findings include rosehips, wintergreen, creeping snowberry, bog cranberries, lingonberry – noon-2pm

    break & lunch on your your own – 2-3:30pm

    Berry-infused syrup making – 3:30-4:30pm

    Break for the night & dinner on your own – 5pm

  • SUNDAY: Wild Mushroom Foraging

    Breakfast in the main lodge – 8-10am

    break – 10-11am

    indoor presentation – 11am-noon

    Time outside identifying & foraging for edible mushrooms. Potential to find lobsters, oysters, and more – noon-3pm

    break & lunch on your your own – 3-6pm

    plated group dinner in the Main Lodge – 6-8PM

shared lodging

bunk with other attendees in our shared “jack pine” cabin. Jack Pine is a 4-bedroom, 1 and 1/2 bath cabin with gas fireplace and full kitchen. guests can sign up for a private room, or a shared room. Sleeps up to 8.

  • Bedroom 1A: King bed + 1 registration – $615

  • Bedroom 1B: 2 twin beds + 2 registrations – $580 each

  • Bedroom 2A: 1 king Bed + 1 registration – $615

  • Bedroom 2B: 2 twin beds + 2 registrations – $580 each

private lodging

bear paw is a 2-bedroom, 1-bathroom cabin with kitchen, 1 queen bed and 2 twin beds. sleeps 4 + dog friendly. $2,300 includes cabin + 4 registrations ($575 each).

Up North is a 2-bedroom, 1-bathroom cabin with kitchen, 2 queen beds and 1 twin beds. sleeps 4 + dog friendly. $2,300 includes cabin + 4 registrations ($575 each).

Cross River Suite is a lodge room with king bed, bathroom, gas fireplace, and jetted soaking tub. sleeps 2. $990 includes lodge room + 1 registration. Please contact us if you would like to add a second registration.

Stargazer is a 2-bedroom lodge room with 1 queen bed, 2 twin beds, bathroom, and galley kitchen. Sleeps up to 4. $1,680 includes lodge room + 3 registrations ($560 each).

Maria has been gathering wild edibles since 2004 and loves sharing this skill with others. She has spent over 10 years teaching foraging and other nature programs at various organizations in the Upper Midwest. In 2017, Maria founded Four Season Foraging to offer monthly foraging workshops, creating a space where people can learn to interact with urban and rural wild places in meaningful and sustainable ways.

 FAQs

  • Yes! Reserve your spot by paying for your respective deposits, and then email Steph (info@borderlandlodge.com) that you would like to be assigned the same bedroom.

  • Yes! If you would like to reserve the private cabin or lodge room but don’t have don’t have enough people (for example only 3 people for a 4-person cabin), please let us know and we can provide an adjusted price.

    Conversely, if you are interested in reserving the Cross River Suite with two people/registrations, please let us know and we can provide an adjusted price.

  • Yes! If you would like to reserve the private cabin and have the deposit split across multiple payments, please let us know and we will create a special check-out link for you.

  • We will provide a welcome happy hour Friday with heavy appetizers, hot breakfast Saturday-Monday (menu here), and a hot dinner Sunday night.

    Please let us know if you have any dietary restrictions.

    Dinner Saturday night will be on your own. Please make sure to plan ahead by either bringing food or visiting one of our neighbor lodges along the trail! Our lodge will also be open for purchasing dinner and drinks Saturday night if you wish to stay in.

  • 4+ weeks notice: $50 fee

    4 weeks and less notice: 75% of total amount fee

    14 days or less notice: no refunds available

    We hope that you can appreciate the amount of time, love, and energy we put into these events. Not just during the event, but the many months leading up to it.

  • The Gunflint Trail is a beautiful place to explore in the fall! Explore the hiking trails not covered by the retreat or take out a complimentary canoe or kayak. This is prime moose season as they are in rut – so keep your eyes peeled. When you return to the lodge, cozy up with a game by the fire or in our sauna tent!
